Iron supplement

Iron tablets, is that really necessary?

Earlier this week, the news reported that as many as a quarter of women are estimated to suffer from anemia due to iron deficiency. So is taking iron tablets the solution? And if so, which supplement is the best choice?

What is iron deficiency?

When you suffer from iron deficiency, you may experience symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath and more. But it is increasingly common for people to have become accustomed to these symptoms and thus not even notice the symptoms. And that's a bad thing, because iron plays an important role in the body! For example, iron is responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood and delivering it to all organs. In addition, iron helps to store oxygen in the blood.

Iron tablets for women

Iron deficiency is on the rise in both men and women because of the way we eat today. Why is this? For starters, it is good to know that vitamin C is the so-called co-factor for iron. This means that the body needs vitamin C for iron absorption. So in the time of the hunters and gatherers, this was well taken care of: in particular, they ate meat (iron) and fruit (vitamin C).

Nowadays, however, we eat more and more plant-based foods, grains, sugars and processed foods. Women in particular face the consequences.

Menstruation and iron

On average, a woman loses 40 milliliters of blood per menstruation. In some cases, this can reach 100 or even 200 milliliters of blood per menstruation. Whereas in prehistoric times women menstruated an average of 160 times in their lifetime (they often had several children and breastfed for a longer period), nowadays women menstruate about 450 times in their lifetime. A significant difference in blood loss.

Therefore, it is not surprising that unfortunately many women suffer from iron deficiency, even during pregnancy. So monitoring this is very important. Furthermore, eating enough iron-rich food is thus incredibly important, but if you do not eat animal products, iron tablets can be the solution.
