Female vs. male hormones

Female vs. male hormones

Hormones play an indispensable role in our lives. They affect not only how we feel, but also how we function and interact. Hormones work differently in men and women, and these differences largely determine how we feel and how we are in relationships. In this blog, you'll discover how female and male hormones function and how this knowledge can create more connection in your relationship.

What are hormones?

Hormones are messengers that regulate all kinds of processes in your body. They play an important role in your metabolism, sleep, emotions, energy levels and reproduction. The main sex hormones are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Although both men and women have these hormones, their amounts, functions and cycles differ greatly.

Sex hormones in women and the menstrual cycle

In women, estrogen and progesterone play the main role. These hormones are not only crucial for the menstrual cycle and fertility, but also affect your mood, energy, skin, sleep and even bone health.

The female hormonal cycle lasts an average of 28 days and has four phases:

  • Menstrual phase (days 1-5): Estrogen and progesterone are low, often resulting in increased fatigue and need for rest.

  • Follicular phase (days 6-14): Estrogen rises, making women feel energetic, bright and creative.

  • Ovulation phase (around day 14): Estrogen peaks, causing increased libido and self-confidence.

  • Luteal phase (day 15-28): Progesterone rises, which prepares the body for a possible pregnancy. Many women experience more need for rest or symptoms such as mood swings, food cravings or sore breasts during this phase.

The fluctuations of the hormonal cycle make women unique and give them a special connection to their bodies. These changes not only affect your energy and emotions, but also provide a natural rhythm to listen to. By consciously moving with your cycle and adjusting your lifestyle accordingly, you can make the most of the power of your hormones.

Sex hormones in men and the 24-hour cycle

In men, testosterone dominates. This hormone is responsible for muscle building, energy, libido and emotional stability. Unlike women, men do not have a monthly cycle, but rather a 24-hour hormonal cycle:

  • In the morning, testosterone levels are highest. This explains why men often feel energized and focused in the morning.

  • During the day, testosterone levels gradually decrease, resulting in lower energy levels by evening.

Although the male hormone cycle seems a lot more stable, testosterone levels decline as men age, which can lead to decreased energy, muscle strength and libido. This requires conscious maintenance of hormone balance.

Balance in relationships between men and women

Knowing about the hormonal differences between you and your partner helps you understand each other better and be more responsive to each other's needs. By knowing how the other's hormones work, you can support each other and develop a deeper appreciation for each other.

The interaction of male and female energy is an important factor here. When a man is firmly in his masculine energy, it creates space for a woman to be fully in her feminine energy - and vice versa.

Male energy represents strength, stability and direction. When a man balances his testosterone and energy, it creates a sense of security and confidence, allowing a woman to more freely let her intuition, creativity and gentleness flow.

Feminine energy is all about intuition, gentleness and creativity. When a woman is in her feminine energy and following the rhythm of her cycle, it can inspire a man to be even more powerful and stable. So supporting each other's energy is not only good for yourself, but can also contribute to your relationship.
