Probiotics have become increasingly popular in recent years. These "good" bacteria are often found in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut. But many of the bacteria found in foods do not survive the journey to your intestines. This is because the acids in your stomach break them down before they even reach the intestines. Therefore, probiotics taken as a supplement can be a nice addition to your diet.
But when is it actually wise to use probiotics? In this blog, we take a closer look at the use of probiotics during pregnancy, during antibiotic treatment and as a maintenance measure.
What are probiotics?
Before we get into when to use probiotics, it is helpful to understand exactly what they are. Probiotics are live microorganisms (bacteria and yeasts) that occur naturally in our intestines. As many as 1,000 different bacteria live in our bodies, which make up our flora. In addition to the intestines, they are also found in our mouth, vagina and on the skin. Of course, these bacteria are not bad; in fact, they are vital!
When to use probiotics?
There are several times when it may be wise to supplement your body's own bacteria with a probiotics in supplement form.
● During pregnancy: The foods and supplements you ingest during pregnancy you pass on to your baby. The composition of your flora is also important. After all, your little one will receive your flora and this forms the basis for the rest of his or her life! For a good start it is therefore advisable to use probiotics during pregnancy. Ask our therapists for advice.
● After a course of antibiotics: Antibiotics are drugs used to treat infections. Unfortunately, they can kill not only harmful bacteria, but also the good bacteria. Taking probiotics during and after a course of antibiotics can help replenish the good bacteria. It is important to take probiotics at least two hours after taking antibiotics, otherwise the antibiotics can kill the probiotics, making them ineffective. An appropriate time to take probiotics is in the evening before bed, for example.
● Every six months as maintenance: In addition to specific situations such as pregnancy and after antibiotics, it may also be wise to take probiotics as a maintenance measure. Many people choose to take probiotics as part of their daily routine, such as every six months for a specified period of time. Make an appointment with one of our therapists for personalized advice.
Summary
Probiotics can be a valuable addition to your diet and lifestyle, especially in specific situations such as during pregnancy, after antibiotic treatment and as a maintenance measure. Although they occur naturally in fermented foods, most bacteria from food do not survive the journey to the intestines. Therefore, probiotics in supplement form can be an effective way to replenish your body's own bacteria.
