The big message - we all do it. We don't like to talk about it, but our stools tell us an awful lot about our gut health. Constipation, PDS, bloating and leaky gut; these are all problems that originate in our intestines. Healthy gut health is essential for a healthy and happy balanced life.
Gut, your second brain
The brain is our most complex organ and scientists actually know very little about it. What they do now know is that our brain communicates closely with our gut, this is done through the brain-gut connection.
Therefore, it is not that our intestines are only responsible for digesting our food. They play an incredibly important role in nutrient absorption and brain control. It communicates through the vagus nerve - the main nerve of the autonomic nervous system.
For example, the brain signals the intestines when food arrives and the intestines signal when there is enough food. This is regulated by the hormone leptin.
Everything you eat affects your brain as well as your gut, and even stress affects not only the brain but also the gut. If you know that the gut produces the same hormones and neurotransmitters as your brain, this is easier to understand. After all, they also have the same nerve cells! In short; your gut is your second brain!
Healthy intestines
All the bacteria in our intestines together are called the microbiome. These bacteria are essential to our health and are constantly fighting each other. In fact, we have both good and bad bacteria in our intestines. In total, there are as many as 800 different species.
Your microbiome is like a mirror of your health. It is responsible for energy production, communication with the brain, the antioxidant system, inflammation and the immune system. Disturbing factors such as a lot of processed food, stress, medication and alcohol often lead to an imbalance in the gut. Once our gut is really damaged it takes time and effort to repair. This is where our therapists lovingly help you.
Types of stools
How is your gut health doing? Your stool tells you. Various factors such as sleep, exercise, stress, fluids and nutrition play an important role.
Loose droppings or a lumpy sausage: Can be a sign of constipation, causes include fluid deficiency, not enough fiber or little exercise. Medication, PDS or a slow-working thyroid can also have this effect.
Hearty sausage: Ideal stools!
Soft droppings: This type of stool tends toward diarrhea and can occur with stress, medication, problems in e digestion, too much sugar or an allergy or intolerance.
Diarrhea: Completely liquid stool has been in the intestines for a short time. It may indicate an infection and there is a risk of dehydration.
If you leave a hearty sausage in the toilet every morning, your bowel movements are most likely fine. Is this not the case with you? Or do you have other complaints?
