Ashwagandha in dietary supplements: can it hurt?

Recently, a news item surfaced in which the RIVM warns about dietary supplements containing certain herbs. According to the RIVM, those herbs can be harmful even if you use them as directed. In this blog, we dive deeper into the herb Ashwagandha.

Herbs in supplements

Herbs are often added to supplements because of their therapeutic properties and potential to support health. Herbs contain various bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. These bioactive compounds can provide a wide range of health benefits. Benefits may include:

  • Support the immune system
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Promote healthy digestion
  • Better and possibly deeper sleep
  • Support for health goals

By adding herbs into supplements, it allows us people to supplement concentrated amounts easily. This can support your health goals and needs in a simple way.

Ashwagandha in supplement form

At Charlotte Labee Supplements, we have a supplement called Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha is generally a safe herb; however, it is important to be vigilant when taking thyroid medications and antidepressants. Do not use it during pregnancy or lactation. Our therapists will be happy to advise you on this. There is currently no scientific link between Ashwagandha and any physical complaints. When you experience hypersensitivity to Ashwagandha for example, it is better not to take it.

From Charlotte Labee Supplements, we think it's important that you don't just start taking supplements. Before you start taking supplements it is important that a therapist looks carefully with you to see which supplements are appropriate. This can be done through our online or telephone supplements advice

There have been rare cases where liver problems occurred while using Ashwagandha. No scientific link has yet been established between Ashwagandha and its effect on the liver. From the cases named by the research from RIVM, it is still unclear whether the reported cases are directly related to Ashwagandha or whether other factors were involved, such as use of other drugs, medication use or disease. The only thing that could be involved is a hypersensitivity to Ashwagandha, which only occurs in very rare cases. For most people, Ashwagandha is safe to use.

Every person is unique

Before taking supplements, it is always important to look at where your needs lie and what your health looks like. This can be done in several ways. By looking at your health, any complaints and what your health needs are with an orthomolecular therapist, you can receive therapeutic advice for your lifestyle.
