The holidays are just around the corner and the Christmas cake, chocolates, oliebollen, glasses of wine and gourmet are flying around your ears during cozy dinners, get-togethers and outings. But how do you go about this consciously? What to eat at Christmas, for stable blood sugar levels, so you can enjoy all the fun without after dinner dips? We discuss it in this blog!
Your blood sugar level
When we eat a lot and often in a day, our blood sugar levels continuously spike and drop. This results in energy dips, fatigue and even more cravings for that piece of cherry stollen or that extra Christmas cookie. But how do you make sure that your blood sugar remains somewhat stable during these days, without having to give up all kinds of goodies? Here are some tips:
Tip 1: Start your day with movement
Go outside and take a walk before your first meal. This gets you moving sober. Sober exercise improves glucose uptake resulting in more stable blood sugar levels.
Tip 2: Watch your protein intake
Protein provides a satiating feeling and keeps your blood sugar levels stable. So start your day not only with a piece of cherry pie but also with a source of protein. Think for example of a delicious omelet with vegetables in it, boiled eggs, (vegetable) cottage cheese or make a smoothie with protein powder.
Tip 3: Drink plenty of water throughout the day
During the holidays, people often opt for a glass of wine or other alcoholic refreshment, but make sure you drink at least 2 liters of water throughout the day. If your body lacks fluid, your kidneys can no longer do their job properly, which can lead to higher blood sugar levels. Therefore, drink about two liters of water or herbal tea daily, especially if you also consume alcohol.
Tip 4: Choose high-fiber foods
These include vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds. The fiber in these foods is important for our gut bacteria and so they help you maintain your blood sugar levels. This is because they slow down the absorption of carbohydrates, so sugars from the carbohydrates are more gradually released into your blood.
This will keep you feeling satiated longer. Are you going to gourmet, for example? Then also provide a variety of vegetables as a side dish
Tip 5: Limit stress
When stressed, your body makes hormones that contribute to higher blood sugar levels. This may sound a little crazy during the holidays, but these days can also be stressful and cause overstimulation.
Therefore, also start your Christmas days with a short meditation, set an intention for the day and before you start each meal breathe in and out deeply 3 times. Our digestive system can only digest in peace.
Tip 6: Support your body with supplements
