What is ashwaganda?

Ashwagandha is a plant species also known as Withania somnifera. The roots of the shrub are used in traditional Indian herbal teachings such as Ayurveda. The herb is known for its strong fragrance, which is why it takes its name from Sanskrit; ashva means "horse" and gandha means "fragrance.

Ashwagandha is known for the presence of withanolides in its roots. The herb also contains whitasomniferanolide, whitaferin A, anahygrin and cuscohygrin.

In many ashwaganda supplements, both the roots and the leaves of the ashwaganda plant are used. The leaves are a lot cheaper, but the roots contain considerably more active ingredients. The KSM-66® extract therefore only contains the roots and enjoys a reputation as a full spectrum extract.

Also special about KSM-66® is the unique extraction process. The ashwagandha roots undergo a preliminary treatment with milk, as is customary in traditional Ayurveda. No alcohol or chemical solvents are used for this natural extraction method. However, traces of lactose can remain.
