What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol belongs to the family of polyphenols. This is a group of chemical compounds found in tea, wine, vegetables and fruit. Resveratrol is particularly abundant in the skin of blue grapes. It is also frequently found in Japanese knotweed, a plant widely used in traditional Chinese herbalism.

Resveratrol is perhaps best known as a constituent of red wine. The skin of the grapes used is present longer during the fermentation process of red wine than that of white wine. Therefore red wine usually contains a higher content of resveratrol. Chocolate is also an example of a well-known product in which this polyphenol is naturally present.
