What is curcuma?

Turmeric is a spice extracted from the roots of the plant Curcuma longa. It is related to the plant from which ginger is extracted and is mainly found in India. Turmeric is known for its distinctive aroma and yellow color. The spice is an important ingredient in curry powder and gives many curry dishes their color and flavor.

Turmeric contains curcuminoids including curcumin. Also present are terpenes such as turmerone, zingiberene, alfafellandrene and eucalyptol.

Turmeric has traditionally been widely used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese herbalism. For example, an extract of this spice can act as an antioxidant and help the liver function normally*. Turmeric can also support normal appetite and digestion*. The influence of turmeric is mainly due to the aforementioned curcuminoids.
