Why a Progesterone test?
Progesterone is a female sex hormone. Together with the hormone estrogen, it plays an important role in the fertility cycle. Progesterone, along with estrogen, ensures that menstruation and ovulation occur regularly. For this to happen, these hormones must occur in a good ratio.
Progesterone produces a feeling of calmness, satiety, relaxation and sleepiness. For these reasons, it is called a calming hormone. Progesterone maintains the endometrium during pregnancy.
Progesterone deficiency can manifest as: hot flashes, tense breasts, migraines, irregular cycle, unfulfilled desire for children, sleep disturbances, decreased libido, weight problems, headaches and/or migraines.
During the half-hour consultation, one of our therapists will discuss the results with you and personalized advice on how you can maintain or improve a good progesterone level.
What is the function of the hormone progesterone?
Progesterone is a female sex hormone. Together with the hormone estrogen, it plays an important role in the fertility cycle. Progesterone, along with estrogen, ensures that menstruation and ovulation occur regularly. For this to happen, these hormones must occur in a good ratio. Progesterone produces a feeling of calmness, satiety, relaxation and sleepiness. For these reasons, it is called a calming hormone. Progesterone maintains the endometrium during pregnancy. After ovulation, progesterone is produced in the ovaries to promote the implantation of a fertilized egg, therefore the level of progesterone is higher in the second half of the cycle. When there is no fertilization of the egg, the production of progesterone will decrease, the endometrium is then broken down and menstruation begins.
When is a progesterone test recommended?
If the level of progesterone is too low or too high, various symptoms can occur. Some examples are:
- hot flashes
- tense breasts
- irregular cycle
- unfulfilled desire for children
- sleep disorders
- decreased libido
- weight problems
- headaches and/or migraines.
The result will be discussed with you in a consultation with our therapist.
