What is mindful living?

Mindful living is more than just a trend; it is a lifestyle that emphasizes awareness and full attention to the present moment. It involves being aware of your thoughts, feelings and surroundings without judgment, while also striving for a deeper understanding of yourself and others.

Mindful living has a number of benefits:

  • Inner peace and calm:Mindful living helps you calm the constant flow of thoughts and find inner peace even during the hectic pace of daily life.
  • Stress Reduction:By being aware of the present moment and focusing on one task at a time, you reduce stress and anxiety, improving your emotional well-being.
  • Better relationships:By being present with full attention in interactions with others, you improve the quality of your relationships and promote empathy and understanding for those around you.

Would you like to start mindful living, but not sure how yet? We'd like to share five tips with you!

  1. Determine what is important to you:

Start by identifying your values and priorities. What is really important to you in life? Focus your attention on activities and relationships that align with these values. You can think about exercise, nutrition, leisure activities, the people in your life and the things around you. When you are clear about what is important to you, you can step by step say goodbye to what does not fit (anymore). For example, do you reluctantly drag yourself to the gym twice a week, but you find swimming lanes wonderfully relaxing? Trade in your gym membership for a 10-lane card at the local pool and do what you feel good about.

  1. Handle your phone differently:

Limit your phone use and set specific times for checking messages and social media. Create intentional moments without constant digital distractions. For many people, the cell phone is a (subconscious) jammer, a device that prevents you from getting into a fine flow. So it's okay to be critical of this and start by turning off all sounds and notifications. It can also help to create phone-free spaces, such as the bedroom, toilet and bathroom. Buy an old-fashioned alarm clock and preferably put your phone in a locker at 8 p.m. at night. This undoubtedly takes some getting used to, but you get a lot in return. For example, time to consciously chat with your family, play a game together without being distracted or finally read that one book!

  1. Stop multitasking:

When you are multitasking, you are definitely not being mindful. Concentrate on one task at a time. By avoiding multitasking, you improve the quality of your life and work and also reduce stress. Starting your day with a concentration or breathing exercise can help.

  1. Give standard tasks your full attention:

Even mundane tasks, such as eating, brushing teeth, walking or cleaning, can be opportunities for mindfulness. Focus your attention on the sensations, smells and experiences in the moment and consciously slow down. Do one thing at a time. So don't iron while occasionally glancing at the television, but feel the fabric, watch the creases disappear and visualize the end result of your task.

  1. Be creative and use your hands more:

Discover the joy of creative expression, whether drawing, painting, gardening or cooking. Using your hands in creative pursuits promotes mindfulness and brings fulfillment. Bake your own bread, make a natural scrub or cleaning product or start crocheting, knitting or sewing.
