Superfoods

Superfoods, sense or nonsense?

Have you come across the term superfoods in your quest for better health and more energy? What exactly are superfoods and why do they deserve a place in your daily diet? In this blog, we dive deeper into the world of superfoods and discover why they are considered valuable additions!

What are superfoods?

Superfoods are natural foods, such as berries, seeds, algae, vegetables and fruits, that have a positive effect on your health.

Superfoods contain a large amount of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, enzymes, algae and trace minerals and unlike "regular" healthy foods (which often have 2-3 healthy properties), superfoods often have as many as 12 or more healthy properties!

So you can think of superfoods as a collection of very nutritious and powerful foods with a huge amount of nutrients! And since our diet today contains less and less nutrients while our body and brain needs them more and more, some extra superfoods are the perfect complement!

Why are superfoods so healthy?

Superfoods are healthy for several reasons, we discuss some of them.

Nutrient density

Superfoods excel in nutrient density, meaning they provide many essential nutrients with relatively few calories. This makes them ideal for people striving for a balanced diet.

Antioxidants

Many superfoods are rich in antioxidants, which protect our bodies from free radicals. These free radicals can cause damage to cells and tissues, which is associated with aging and various diseases.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Some superfoods have natural anti-inflammatory properties, so they can help reduce inflammation in the body, which in turn can have positive effects on overall health. You can think of berries, these contain anti-inflammatory compounds called anthocyanins.

Improves overall health

Regular consumption of superfoods is associated with several health benefits, including a strengthened immune system, improved digestion, and reduced risk of certain chronic diseases.

Examples of superfoods

Chia seed

Packed with fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Chia seeds can contribute to healthy digestion and feeling satiated.

Chlorella

Stimulates the renewal of (blood) cells and has a detoxifying effect - it drains toxins and heavy metals from the body.*

Blueberries

Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, blueberries are associated with promoting healthy brain function and strengthening the immune system.

Maca

Improves hormone balance, increasing fertility and libido.*

Quinoa

A nutritious grain that is a complete source of protein. Quinoa also contains fiber and several important minerals.

Spirulina

Blue-green algae packed with protein, vitamins and minerals and the fatty acids. Contains DHA, GLA and EPA, which is good for the brain.*

Superoods

Superfoods are not a substitute for healthy eating!

So while superfoods are incredibly valuable, they are an addition to healthy meals and not a replacement. No single food can provide all the nutrients needed, so variety is the key to a balanced diet.
